AUGUSTULUS, Romulus, the last Roman emperor of the West, ascending the throne in 475. He succeeded his father, Orestes, but was overthrown by Odoacer, a year after taking charge of the government, and was banished to the castle of Lucullus in Campania.

It is ironic that the name of the last of the Roman emperor of the West, Romulus, was also the name of the mythical founder of Rome. As well, the name of Augustulus, refers to the name of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.
